DAY 10 NOV 4, Sunday San Sebastian short drive to Elizondo (Baztan Valley – Basque country)

DAY 10 NOV 4, Sunday San Sebastian short drive to Elizondo (Baztan Valley – Basque country)

Only 6 people at the hotel san Sebastian for breakfast, brilliant sunshine without clouds, cool and brisk at 54F. Will definitely need sunglasses for the drive into Elizondo. Garmin has an AVOIDANCES to pay tolls so she should direct us out of town to Irun, the border with France and then on to the big E without taking the peaje toll road. It was like driving down memory lane the port at Renteria, etc, Irun.

Arrived earlier than forecasted at 1330. Everyone waiting to see us:  Juanmi, Maite, and Alberto. Pablo has several exams and remained in Madrid for this 4 day weekend. Asun joined us for lunch at the apartment:  White asparagus, tomatoes/onions, merluza with peppers, good wine and beer. It was super sweet of Maite to make lunch for us all especially with such a long drive back to Madrid later. Everyone looks wonderful. The family hit the road at 4:30 expecting heavy traffic as others return from the long weekend. Juanmi has surgery scheduled for 0900 Monday. Alberto has two exams and is in his final or 4th year already. He has accepted a consulting contract from a company who want him to start immediately upon graduation but will pay for his studies to obtain a Masters next fall. Not bad for a 21-year-old in Spain!!!

We walked over to the Posada in Elbete to see Carlos and Belen. They are closed Sunday evening as well as Monday and Tuesday. The hotel had been full the whole weekend and they need their rest to recover. Won’t see them until Thursday but definitely then!

Overcast by night fall as we searched high and low to find somewhere to eat on Sunday evening. Seems that everything is closed in town on Sunday evening in order to be ready for the work week ahead. I don’t remember Elizondo being this quiet! However, I guess they has a hard weekend celebrating and need some time off. Ultimately we drove to Mugaire at the turnoff restaurant who have combination plates for a light meal. The place had a huge table the length of the restaurant full of diners who inspected us thoroughly when we walked in! We saw no bus so it must have been a large group of locals. Back to the apartment at 1000PM….quiet and early night for us.

Looks like the weather is going to be iffy but we are HOME in Elizondo for a week of rest and recuperation!!
